San Joaquin / Sierra Regional Perinatal Program

Population Served

The Region serves nine counties in the San Joaquin Valley, Kern, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Madera, 
Merced, Mariposa, Stanislaus and Tuolumne.  A large geographic area, the Region includes over 45,000 
square miles, over 65 cities and a population of 3.4 million people.  The Region is one of the most 
productive agricultural areas in the world; with more than 220 different crops and the largest 
concentration of dairies, it is known as the “Agribusiness Center of the World”. Despite this acclaim, the 
characteristics of the area include poor air quality, relatively high rates of poverty, low educational 
attainment, relatively poor performance on health indicators, a disproportionate shortage of health care 
providers and services, and high population growth rates.  

The San Joaquin - Sierra Regional Perinatal Program and the California Diabetes in Pregnancy Program 
work with those who care for families in the Valley, to ensure improved pregnancy outcomes and access 
to care for the over 55,000 births that occur annually.

Organization
The San Joaquin/Sierra Regional Perinatal Program is a collaborative project of the California Health  Collaborative. Our mission as a non-profit organization is in response to community based initiatives that  improve heath.  The Collaborative provides services, health education and advocacy for underserved  populations throughout the State.  Particular emphasis is placed on those who lack access to health care  and the unique needs of California’s diverse cultural communities.
