Population Served
The Perinatal Outreach Education Program services region 6.1 in Los Angeles 
County. The cities include: Artesia, Bellflower, Downey, Cerritos, Compton, Lakewood, 
Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lynwood, Paramount, South Central, Torrance and Whittier. 
Total live births approach 25,000 with approximately 61% of those births being Hispanic, 
18% Caucasian, 12% African American, 8% Asian and less than 1% Native American 
and unknown.  

Programs and Activities

  • Quarterly meetings of the Southeast Los Angeles Perinatal Advisory Council
  • (SELAPAC) to provide professional continuing education and quality
     improvement projects.
  • Facilitate work groups for improved Region-wide clinical and perinatal practices
  • Updates on Perinatal and Neonatal guidelines for care
  • "Sweet Success" California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program (CDAPP)
  • Consultation for patient care management
  • Information about professional education, seminars and lectures
  • Regional newsletter “The Bridge”, is published and distributed in conjunction
  •       with Statewide Perinatal Care Matters quarterly newsletter.
  • Access to current perinatal information via the Internet
  • Lending library with emphasis on cross-cultural perinatal materials
  •   
  • Perinatal Multicultural Task Force

Organization
The Perinatal Outreach Education Program is based at Miller Children’s Hospital. It 
maintains contracts with community hospitals for Outreach Education or Sweet Success 
Affiliation and works in active collaboration with public and private community partner 
agencies and organizations dedicated to improving the outcomes of pregnancy.
